Description

An Apple II clone is a third-party microcomputer engineered to be hardware and software compatible with the original Apple II ecosystem. Produced globally during the 1980s, these systems replicated Apple's architecture using locally sourced components to provide a cost-effective alternative in regions where genuine Apple hardware was prohibitively expensive or strictly restricted. To achieve full software versatility, enthusiast configurations typically included critical expansion cards installed in the motherboard's internal slots: 16KB RAM Language Card: This expansion populates the upper memory bank, boosting the system from the standard 48KB to a full 64KB of RAM. It enables bank-switching with the onboard ROM to load advanced operating systems like ProDOS and languages like Applesoft BASIC. Z80 CP/M SoftCard: Featuring an onboard Zilog Z80 microprocessor, this coprocessor card temporarily overrides the main MOS 6502 CPU. It allows the machine to boot the industry-standard CP/M operating system and execute professional 1980s business software, including WordStar and dBASE II. Floppy Disk Drive Interface Card: This dedicated controller interfaces with 5.25-inch disk drives (such as the Disk II). It manages data transfer via ribbon cables to boot DOS 3.3, load high-performance software, and handle magnetic storage media. Today, these fully expanded clones are highly prized by retrocomputing collectors for their historical role in early computer piracy, localization, and hardware preservation.
